Week 26   Day 1

    the foundation is fundamental
    it is the base upon which everything is built
it is what we start with
it is what remains if everything is removed
our health comes and goes
our wealth rises and falls
our spirit soars and sinks

    a foundation must be strong
bearing whatever is placed upon it
holding whatever is expected of it

    the psalmist talks about
a rock
a fortress
    and the implication is
that our life needs a foundation
that our life needs a protector

    it is important upon what we build
    and upon whom we rest our full weight
if only upon our strength it collapses
if only upon our family members they fail at times
if only our friends they may fall away

they are more like a wall than a foundation
          they are more like a circle surrounding us
          they are more like a room for renewal
             not upon whom we put the full weight
                      not upon whom we rest the totality of our lives

    the Lord is
my rock
my fortress
my protector
             my foundation

                         IMAGES OF DELIVERANCE
              Rock, fortress, shield, protector, lamp . . .
                                           Psalms 18

     1 I will love You, O Lord, my strength.

2The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;

My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold,

3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;

So shall I be saved from my enemies.

     4The pangs of death surrounded me;

The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

The snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God;

He heard my voice, and my cry came to His ears.

     16He sent from above; He drew me out of many waters,

17He delivered me from my enemy, from those who hated me.

18They confronted me in the day of my calamity

But the Lord was my support, 19and brought me to a broad place;

He delivered me because He delighted in me.

     20The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;

According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.

25With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful;

26With the devious You show Yourself shrewd.

27You will save the humble, but will bring down haughty looks.

     28You will light my lamp and enlighten my darkness.

29By my God I can run against a troop, and leap over a wall.

30As for God, His way is perfect; His word is proven.

He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

     31Who is God, except the Lord?  A rock, except our God?

32 It is God who arms me with strength.

33He makes my feet like the feet of deer,

And sets me on my high places.

     35You have given me the shield of Your salvation;

Your right hand holds me up,

Your gentleness has made me great.

36You enlarged my path under me, so that my feet did not slip.

     46The Lord lives!   Blessed be my Rock!

Let the God of my salvation be exalted.

47 It is God who avenges me, and subdues the peoples;

48He delivers me from my enemies.  You lift me up above those

Who rise against me; You delivered me from the violent man,

49Therefore I will give thanks to You among the Gentiles,

And sing praises to your name.
