Week 49   Day 3

Like Paul, the writer of Hebrews

            wants
                   to strengthen the believers

                   to strengthen their believing

What do we need when it is hard to believe

            we need someone to understand

and accept us where we are

But the gospel is about transformation

we can not stay where we are

it is not good for us

the alternatives to faith are not desirable

                        can even be destructive

What we need is someone who will call us forth

like Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb

someone who will remind us again and again

about the beauty of the gospel

                        God's loving kindness

                        God's faithfulness

the fellowship of his Holy Spirit

                        the fellowship of other believers

                        about forgiveness and reconciliation

As we believe so will we live

therefore say with the Palmist

"I believe that I will see

            the goodness of the Lord

in the land of the living."

And underline each significant word as you say it

starting with the first word, "I".

                                           PERSEVERE

Follow Christ in this life or face God's rejection in the next.

                                            Hebrews 10

1The law, with these same sacrifices, which they offer

continually year by year, can never make those who approach

perfect.  2For then would they not have ceased to be offered?

The worshipers, once purified, would have had no more

consciousness of sins.  3But in those sacrifices there is a

reminder of sins every year.  4 It is not possible that the

blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

5When He came into the world, He said:  "Sacrifice and

offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared

for Me.  7Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do Your will,

O God.'"   He takes away the first that He may establish the

second.  10By that we will have been sanctified through the

offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11Every priest stands ministering daily and offering

repeatedly the same sacrifices.  12But this Man, after He had

offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right

hand of God.

19Having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of

Jesus, 20by a new and living way which He consecrated for

us, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of

faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience

and our bodies washed with pure water.  23Let us hold fast

the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who

promised is faithful.  24Consider one another in order to stir

up love and good works, 25not forsaking the assembling of

ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting

one another, as you see the Day approaching.

26 If we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge

of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but

a fearful expectation of judgment.   28Anyone who has

rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of

two or three witnesses.  29Of how much worse punishment,

do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled

the Son of God underfoot, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

32Recall the former days after you were illuminated, you

endured a great struggle with sufferings.  34You had

compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the

plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and

an enduring possession in heaven.  35Therefore do not cast

away your confidence.  39We are not of those who draw back.
