Week 37   Day 4

                        it is amazing

                        how some modern discoveries

are found buried in ancient scripture

growing out of the Old Testament

                        replanted in the Gospel

                        wonderful truths

                        the religious

                        sparring with Jesus

thought they had sprung a trap

is it possible to state THE greatest commandment

                        without diminishing all the others

                        making the sacred succinct

                        the response

                        is simple but powerful

as Jesus lays out three things

love God with all we have and are

                        love our neighbor

                        and love ourselves

                                                URGENCY

Go, sell; come, follow.  Love God and neighbor as yourself.

                                             Mark 10 & 12

17One came running, knelt before Jesus, and asked, "Good

Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"  18Jesus

said to him, "Why do you call Me good?  No one is good but

God.  19You know the commandments:  'Do not commit

adultery,'  'Do not murder,'  'Do not steal,'  'Do not bear false

witness,'  'Do not defraud,'  'Honor your father and mother.'"

20He answered Him, "Teacher, all these things I have kept

from my youth."  21Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and

said to him, "One thing you lack:  Go your way, sell whatever

you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in

heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me."  22But he

was sad at this word, and went away, for he had great possessions.

23Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, 24"How hard

it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than

for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."   26They were

greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"  27Jesus

looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not

with God; for with God all things are possible."

28Peter began to say, "We have left all and followed You."

29So Jesus answered, "Assuredly, there is no one who has left

house, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children or lands,

for My sake and the gospel's, 30who shall not receive a

hundredfold now--houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children

and lands, with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal

life.  31Many who are first will be last, and the last first.

28One of the scribes asked, "Which is the first commandment

of all?"  29Jesus answered, "'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God,

the Lord is one.  30Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all
your strength.'
This is the first commandment.  31The second,
is this:  'Love
your neighbor as yourself.'  There is no
other commandment
greater than these."

32The scribe said to Him, "Well said.  You have spoken the

truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.  33To

love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all

the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as

oneself, is more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.'

34Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to

him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."
