Week 19   Day 6

Idolatry is the worship of things we can see

            instead of worshiping

            the invisible God

in whose image we are made

and who resides in our spirit

We can only see God with eyes of faith.

In his day Elijah had put all the prophets of Baal to death

Now Jehu does it again for his generation.

In Israel, Ahab had a son Jehoram, also called Joram.

In Judah, Jehosaphat also named his son Jehoram

this Jehoram married Ahab's daughter Athaliah

and succeeded his father on the throne.

This Jehoram was a brother to Jehu

who commanded the armies of Judah.

He and Athaliah had a son Ahaziah who became king of Judah

and was friends with king Joram of Israel.

So while one brother married into Ahab's family and befriended Israel,

the other brother, Jehu, plotted to rid Israel of Ahab's posterity
            and evil influence.

Jehu was uncle to Ahaziah

and Joram was his brother's brother-in-law.

Athaliah, Ahab's daughter and therefore from Israel, succeeded her
            son
to the throne and became queen of Judah.

                                      ZEAL FOR THE LORD
Jehu purged the land, killing God's enemies.
                                             II Kings 9 &10

25 In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab, 14Jehu the

son of Jehoshaphat, conspired against Joram.  16So Jehu rode

in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram was laid up there;

and Ahaziah of Judah had come down to see Joram.   17Now

a watchman on the tower in Jezreel saw the company of Jehu

as he came.  And Joram said, "Get a horseman and send him

to meet them, and say, 'Is it peace?'"  18The horseman went

and said, "Thus says the king:  'Is it peace?'"  Jehu said, "What

have you to do with peace?  Turn and follow me."

So the watchman reported, "The messenger went to them,

but is not coming back."  19Then he sent out a second horseman

who came to them, and said,  "Is it peace?"  Jehu answered,

"Turn around and follow me."  20The watchman reported,

"He went up to them and is not coming back; and the driving

is like the driving of Jehu, for he drives furiously!"

21Joram said, "Make ready."  Then Joram and Ahaziah went,

each in his chariot; and they met Jehu on the property of Naboth

the Jezreelite.  22When Joram saw Jehu, he said, "Is it peace,

Jehu?"  So he answered, "What peace, as long as the harlotries

of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?"

23Then Joram turned around and fled, and said to Ahaziah,

"Treachery!"  24Now Jehu drew his bow with full strength and

shot Joram between his arms; and he sank down in his chariot.

Jehu said, "Throw him into the field of Naboth.  For the Lord

laid this burden upon him:  26'Surely I saw the blood of Naboth

and his sons,' says the Lord, 'and I will repay you in this plot.'"

30When Jezebel heard it, she put paint on her eyes, adorned

her head, and looked through a window.  31As Jehu entered the

gate, she said, "Is it peace?"  32He looked up and said, "Who is
on my side?"  So two or three eunuchs looked out at him.  33He

said, "Throw her down."  They threw her down, and some of her

blood spattered on the horses; and he trampled her underfoot.

18Then Jehu said, "Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve

him much.  19Call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants,

and all his priests.  Let no one be missing."  But Jehu acted

deceptively, with the intent of destroying the worshipers of Baal.

25As soon as he had made an end of the burnt offering, Jehu
said to the guard, "Go in and kill them, let no one come out!"

27They tore down the temple of Baal and made it a refuse
dump.
28Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.
