Week 31   Day 2

God expects and demands integrity

we cannot live against God and then

come into the temple and worship

            we cannot live all week

                        as though God doesn't exist

            and then come to church

                        on Sunday and pray.

What do you glory in?

Jeremiah reminds us to glory in

            God

            in knowing God

To know God is to become like God

We cannot know God and

            hate our brother

We cannot love God and

            take advantage of

            oppress

            profit at another person's expense

            look the other way

be deaf to the pain of others.

Jeremiah declared the word of the Lord

but people did not want to hear it

            and started a smear campaign.

                                          TO THE TEMPLE
Worshiping what your hands have made is a worthless religion.
                                         Jeremiah 7, 9 & 18

1The Lord, said, 2"Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and

proclaim there this word, 'Hear all you of Judah who enter in at

these gates to worship the Lord!  Amend your ways and I will

cause you to dwell in this place.  5 If you thoroughly execute

judgment between a man and his neighbor, 6if you do not oppress

the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed

innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your

hurt, 7then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that

I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

8"'Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit.  9Will

you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense

to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know,

10and then come and stand before Me in this house which is

called by My name?  11Has My house become a den of thieves?'"

     23Thus says the Lord:

"Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,

Let not the mighty glory in his might; nor the rich man his riches.

24But let him who glories glory in this,

That he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord,

Exercising loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.

For in these I delight," says the Lord.

11"Now speak to Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

saying, 'Thus says the Lord:  "Behold, I am devising a plan

against you.  Return now every one from his evil way, and

make your ways and your doings good."'"  12And they said,

"This is hopeless!   We will walk according to our own

plans, and every one obey the dictates of his evil heart."

     13Therefore thus says the Lord:

"Ask now among the Gentiles, who has heard such things?

14Will a man leave the snow water which comes from the rock?

Will the cold flowing waters be forsaken for strange waters?

15My people have forgotten Me, they have burned incense

to worthless idols.  They have stumbled from the ancient paths

to walk in pathways and not on a highway, 16to make their

land desolate and a perpetual hissing; everyone who passes by

will be astonished and shake his head.  17 I will scatter them

as with an east wind before the enemy."

18Then they said, "Come, let us devise plans against

Jeremiah.  Let us attack him with the tongue, and not give

heed to any of his words."
