Week 1  Day 7

God started over with humankind
      this time fully accepting
the premise of our inclination to do evil
I can hear those wheels turning
      in God's head
as God ponders what to do
about sin and deliverance from it.

Another picture of God in this passage
God is like a man who smells something very good
      cooking in the kitchen
and it affects his heart and mind
The ancient Hebrews viewed their animal sacrifices in that way
      God smelled them
      looked down
      was pleased
      and then blessed them.

Signs are reminders
the sign of the covenant with Noah was the rainbow
      with Abraham it was circumcision
with the Israelites it was the Sabbath
These are all visible signs to help people remember
      their covenantal relationship with God.

                     THE ARK OF DELIVERANCE
After the flood came the rainbow and a new beginning.
                                   Genesis 8 & 9

1Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing with
him in the ark.  God made a wind to pass over the earth, and
the waters subsided. 2The fountains of the deep and the
windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain restrained.
3At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters
decreased.  4Then the ark rested in the seventh month, on
the mountains of Ararat.
6At the end of forty days, Noah opened the window and
sent out a dove 9but the dove found no resting place.  10 He
waited another seven days, and again sent the dove out.
11The dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly
plucked olive leaf was in her mouth.  12So he waited yet
another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not
return again to him anymore.
13Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and
indeed the surface of the ground was dry.  15Then God spoke
to Noah, saying, 16"Go out of the ark, you and your wife,
and your sons and your sons' wives with you. 17Bring out
with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you:  birds
and cattle and everything that creeps on the earth, so that
they may abound, and be fruitful and multiply."
20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of
every clean animal and bird, and offered burnt offerings
on the altar.  21The Lord smelled a soothing aroma, and
said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for
man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is
evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living
thing as I have done.  22While the earth remains, seedtime
and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day
and night shall not cease."
12God said:  "This is the sign of the covenant which
I make between Me and you, and every living creature
that is with you, for perpetual generations:  13 I set My
rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be the sign of this
covenant.  14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the
earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15and
I will remember My covenant and the waters shall never
again become a flood to destroy all flesh.  I will remember
the everlasting covenant between God and every living
creature that is on the earth."
