| Week 14 Day 3
Goliath and David are a study in contrasts
complete opposites
coming together once in a lifetime
Did this situation look ridiculous?
you bet it did
David showed no fear
and appeared very foolish
"The battle is the Lord's"
is what David claimed
The words came out of his mouth
but did he believe them in his heart?
From David's actions, we must conclude
he was seeing something different
than what others saw
David armed himself
with five smooth stones
a shepherd's bag
a sling
many years practice
and the power of the Lord
We marvel at David's courage
confidence
faith
as he put himself on the line
in the hands of God.
GOLIATH'S DEMISE Five smooth stones, a shepherd's bag, and a sling. I Samuel 17
4A champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span (over 9 feet tall). 5He had a bronze helmet and a coat of armor. 6He had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. 7The staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels (125 pounds); and a shield-bearer went before him. 8Goliath cried out, "Why have you come out to line up for battle? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to kill me, we will be your servants. But if I kill him, you shall be our servants." 11Saul and all Israel heard these words, and they were greatly afraid.
32David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." 33Saul said to David, "You are not able; you are a youth, and he is a man of war." 34But David said, "Your servant used to keep his father's sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb, 35 I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. 36Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the Lord be with you!" 40David took his staff; he chose five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, and his sling was in his hand. He drew near to the Philistine. 42When Goliath looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth. 43So the Philistine said, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!"
45David said, "You come to me with a sword, a spear, and
a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts,
the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 47The Lord does not save with sword and spear; the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands."
48When Goliath arose and came near, David hurried and ran to meet him. 49David took out a stone; slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. This Bible passage was condensed from the NKJV
