Week 1  Day 4 

This passage is sometimes referred to as "The Fall"

        whatever you call it

        something tragic happened

        that forever changed

        our lives and relationships

When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit

        they received their first blow from evil

It struck like a wedge between them

Their innocence vanished

        and they sewed leaves together

        to hide their shame.

The judgments of God are swift and severe

        but notice at the end

        God is still there

        and offering an act of kindness.

We were created for God

        and to enjoy God's presence

But then God gave us freewill

        so that we can accept or reject

        we can say yes or no

We can turn away from God on our own freewill

We can turn back toward God on our own freewill

The remainder of the Bible demonstrates

        how God seeks to return us to himself

                in great events

                in daily happenings

        again and again and again.

  They listened to the wrong voice, then made excuses.

                                             Genesis 3

    1The serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field

which the Lord God had made.  He said to the woman, "Has

God said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" 
2The woman said, "We may eat the fruit of the trees;3but of the
fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You
shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'"

    4The serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.

5God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be
opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

    6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food

and desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and
ate.  She also gave to her husband, and he ate.  7The eyes
of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were

naked; they sewed figs leaves together and made
coverings.

    8Then they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in

the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife
hid themselves from the presence of the Lord.  9The Lord

God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"

10Adam said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was

afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."

    11God said, "Who told you that you were naked?  Have

you eaten from the tree I commanded you not to eat?" 
12The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with
me, gave me of the tree, and I ate."  13The Lord God said
to the woman, "What is this you have done?"  The woman
said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

    14So the Lord God said to the serpent: "Because you

have done this, you are cursed more than every beast of the

field; on your belly you shall go, and eat dust all the days of

your life.  15 I will put enmity between you and the woman."

    16To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your

sorrow; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire

shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."

    17Then to Adam He said:  "Cursed is the ground for your

sake; in toil you shall eat of it all your days.  18Thorns and

thistles it shall bring forth.  19 In the sweat of your face you

shall eat bread till you return to the ground; for dust you are,

and to dust you shall return."

    20Adam called his wife's name Eve.  21Also for Adam and

his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
